Mohammad Hajizadeh

Dr. Mohammad Hajizadeh leads the HEAP lab as Canada Research Chair in Health Economics and Professor in the School of Health Administration at Dalhousie University. The HEAP lab, under Mohammad’s leadership, focuses on producing research that informs policy to improve equity in health and healthcare. Further information about Mohammad can be found here.

  • Sujita Pandey

    PhD Candidate

    Sujita is a PhD in Health student and was awarded Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship for her doctoral research. She is a member of the 2022-2023 Executive team in the PhD Health Student Society at Dalhousie. She holds an M.S. in Economics and is currently working on the impact of Canadian public policies on health and health equity. More broadly, her research interests are in understanding the impact of public and health policies on health and health care.

  • Tania Tanwi

    PhD Student

    Tania is a PhD in Health student and received Faculty of Health scholarship for her doctoral study. She is a member of the 2022-2023 Executive team in the PhD Health Student Society at Dalhousie. She holds an M.S.S in Economics and was also awarded ‘Prime Minister Gold Medal’ for academic excellence in Bachelor’s. Prior to embarking on her doctoral study, she worked as a Research Investigator at International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). Her research interest is focused on impact of public policies on health and health equity.

  • Firoozeh Bairami

    Firoozeh Bairami

    PhD Student

    Firoozeh is a PhD in Health student and received Faculty of Health scholarship for her doctoral research. She holds an MSc in Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics from Spain and also an MSc in Healthcare Management from Iran. Prior to joining Dalhousie, she was working as a Scientific Project Lead in the European Society of Cardiology, investigating the Burden of Cardiovascular Disease in the European Union. She is currently working on the impact of Canadian public policies on health and wellbeing of aging population in Canada utilizing mixed methods.

  • Zobraj Hosen

    Zobraj Hosen

    PhD Student

    Zobraj is a PhD in Health student and received a Faculty of Health scholarship for his PhD study at Dalhousie University. He holds an MSc in Development Economics with distinction from the University of Birmingham, UK and is currently researching the effects of retirement on older Canadians' health and occupational health disparities. His research interest is exploring causal inferences in Applied Economics, especially health-related policy evaluations.

  • Moriam Khanam

    PhD Student

    Moriam is a PhD in Health student and received Faculty of Health scholarship for her doctoral study at Dalhousie University. She holds an MSc in Health Economics and Decision Science with distinction from the University College London (UCL), UK. Prior to starting her PhD journey, she worked as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Health Economics (IHE), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Her research interest is focused on the impact of public policies on health and health equity. She is currently working on the effects of social policies on health status and health inequities of immigrant children in Canada.

  • Faramarz Jalili

    PhD Student

    Faramarz is a PhD in Health student at Dalhousie University. He holds a Master of Health Administration (MHA) from Dalhousie University and previously earned a Pharm.D. from Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. He has been recognized for his academic excellence, having won the Dal’s Faculty of Graduate Studies Harmonized Scholarship, as well as receiving several awards in his other programs. Additionally, he was awarded the Harold A. Robertson Scholarship in Parkinson's Research and the Foster McGaw Scholarship from the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has extensive interest and experience in long-term care, winning the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship award and the Shannex Prize in Innovative Practice for Aging Population in 2024 . His PhD thesis focuses on socioeconomic inequalities in cancer care and outcomes in Canada.

  • Kylie Curnew

    MSc Student

    Kylie is a MSc student in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research. She has been awarded several prestigious scholarships, including the CIHR Strategic Master's Award, the Scotia Scholars Award, and the Dalhousie Harmonized Scholarship. She holds a BASc in Health with Honours from St. Francis Xavier University. Her research focuses on Indigenous health equity and policy interventions, examining socioeconomic inequalities in chronic diseases among Indigenous people through her work with the HEAP Lab

  • Kaveh Wornell

    MSc Student

    Kaveh is a MSc student in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research. He has been awarded a RNS Scotia Scholars Award. He holds a BSc in Biology from Saint Mary’s University. He played varsity soccer for the Saint Mary’s Huskies for four years, and is now playing for the Dalhousie Tigers. His research focuses on the socioeconomic inequality in breast and cervical cancer screening uptake.

  • Dr. Ali Kiadaliri

    Research Associate

    Dr. Kiadaliri is an Associate Professor of Health Economics at Lund University, Sweden, and an affiliate of the Division of Insurance Medicine at Karolinska Institutet, where he is part of the Mental Health and Social Integration research group. He holds a PhD in Health Economics from Lund University. His research interests include applied microeconometrics, study design, patient-reported outcomes, productivity loss, economic evaluation, and socioeconomic health inequalities, including intersectionality.

  • Dr. Mohammad Pulok

    Research Associate

    The aim of Mohammad's research programme is to promote fairness and justice in healthcare systems through evidence-based policy research. His current research focuses on equity in healthcare and financing in Canada and health economics of frailty in Nova Scotia. Mohammad is a Senior Health Analyst at Alberta Health Services, Canada

  • Dr. Jalal Uddin

    Research Fellow

    Dr. Uddin's research interests center on social determinants of health, aging & the life course, and population health. His recent research focuses on two lines of work: 1) childhood adversity and children's and adult health and 2) immigration, nativity, gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status-related inequalities in chronic conditions in Canada and the United States. Dr. Uddin holds a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and a Killam Postdoctoral Scholar position at the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology at Dalhousie University. He earned a Ph.D. in Medical Sociology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

  • Evelyn Ma

    Research Assitant

    Evelyn holds an MA in Economics from The University of British Columbia. Drawing on a data-oriented approach, she applies analytical techniques to address a range of societal challenges, including the impacts of air quality on labour supply. Her passion for applied economics is driven by a commitment to address pressing public health issues through evidence-based research. Evelyn's recent research focuses on the evaluation of the Guaranteed Income Supplement in Canada.

    Thiago holds an MA in Economics from Dalhousie University. He has joined HEAP to evaluate the impact of retirement income programs on health and health equity among Canadian seniors.

  • Emran Hasan

    Emran Hasan

    Research Assistant

    Emran is a Research Assistant at the School of Health Administration, Dalhousie University. He holds an M.S.S in Economics from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has been working as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Bangladesh University of Professionals, Bangladesh. He also holds Associate Director position at Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID), a Dhaka-based local think-tank in Bangladesh. His research interest lies in Applied Economics at the intersection of Development and Health Economics. Specifically, he researches on exploring the impact of public policies (social, health and economic) on health inequalities and wide array of health outcomes. Currently, he is working on the long-term impact of vaccination program on economic outcomes.

  • Saeed Saffari

    Research Assistant

    Saeed holds an MA in Economics from Dalhousie University and has five years of experience in research and policy analysis. Passionate about using data to drive meaningful insights, he applies advanced analytical techniques and programming skills to address complex health-related challenges while advancing evidence-based policies that promote equity and well-being. His current research examines the impact of public policies on the gender gap in life expectancy and life disparity.

  • Daniel Keays

    Research Assistant

    Daniel is a current Ph.D. student in the Business Administration program at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS. He also holds an MA in Economics and is undertaking research projects in the field of health as well as in occupational health and safety (OHS), particularly related to workers with disabilities. His research passion stems from the intersection and relations between economics and the well-being of minority groups. Daniel’s interests include economics of minorities, social policy, programming, and statistics.

  • Neha Katote

    Neha is a first-year student at Dalhousie Medical School. Her research with the HEAP Lab examines education and income inequalities in ovarian cancer mortality among women in Canada. She graduated from the Medical Sciences program at Dalhousie in 2021.

  • Kelly Zhang

    Kelly is a medical student at Dalhousie Medical School. Her project examines socioeconomic inequalities in the mortalities of lymphoma over 30 years in Canada. She worked as a registered nurse prior to medical school.
